German airline Lufthansa announced Thursday that it is canceling all passenger and cargo flights to and from Israel until at least August 8.

Citing a "current development in the region" for the pause on flights, the Lufthansa spokesperson also said the carrier is extending its suspension of flights to and from Beirut until August 12.

Numerous airlines have halted flights to the Middle East as tensions in the region grow. Lebanon is bracing for expected retaliation from Israel after a strike on Saturday killed 12 children and teenagers in an Israeli-occupied area of the Golan Heights.

The Lebanese militant group Hezbollah denies any involvement in the attack.

Lufthansa Group's announcement comes a day after the United States Embassy in Lebanon issued a Level 4: Do Not Travel advisory.
